Day 2—At Sea
Slept pretty good last night. I did wake up at around 3:00—I think it was because the ship was moving around quite a bit, but just rolled over and went back to sleep. Woke up again a little before 5:00 and I was wide away, so I went ahead and took my shower and got dressed. Went out on deck (which is easy since my room is just a few steps from the lower promenade deck which wraps around the entire ship—kind of like a really big wrap-around porch) to see what the weather was like. It was cold, gray, rainy, and the wind was blowing pretty good.
Went up to the Lido for a cooked-to-order omelet for breakfast, and of course coffee! Jim, who was the husband of the couple at my table at dinner last night, asked if he could join me since his wife was sleeping in. At 10:00 I went up the Crow’s Nest for the line-dance lessons. Great entertainment since the ship was rolling back and forth and pitching up and down—we were all laughing so much since none of us could stand in a line, let alone try to actually dance.
At noon, I went to the dining room for the singles and solo luncheon. Saw many of the same people I had already met who were also travelling alone (Sharon, Evelyn, Jackie, Jill) and met a few more. There were 18 of us at two tables—15 women and 3 men. I had a Greek salad and fish and chips. The food so far has been very good and I’m really glad that the portions haven’t been huge (of course some people do have seconds, and some, especially in the Lido buffet eat thirds). During lunch, everyone at my table was comparing how many days they had on cruises. Some folk said they had over 300, another one said they had 78 days, and so on. When my turn came, I looked at my watch and said, “In 10 minutes, I’ll have one day. They all laughed and asked me what I thought and how I liked it. They also asked how I was feeling and I said I felt fine.
At 2:00 I went to a Geography and Geology of Hawaii lecture, which explained how Hawaii was formed and talked a lot about the volcanoes—very interesting. Left the lecture a little early to go to the Indonesian High Tea which started at 3:00. Sharon showed up as well, so we sat together and had tea and little sandwiches and desserts. I had jasmine tea, little cucumber sandwiches, and a sticky rice dessert which consisted of rice with coconut and made into a little ball.
Following the tea, Sharon and I went to the Crow’s Nest to meet up with the Cruise Critic folks for the meet and greet, which started at 4:30. About 12 of us showed up and it was nice meeting folks that I had “met” on Cruise Critic.
After that, I went to a nice little sitting area and read for a while. There sure didn’t seem to be very many people on the cruise since no place was very crowded at all; course all the decks and were empty since it was so cold and rainy out.
Finally went back to my room at 7:00 pm to dress for dinner. This time I had the French onion soup and the salmon. The soup was a little watery, but the salmon was good. It was supposed to come with wasabi mashed potatoes, but I asked Gede if I could have a baked potato instead and, of course, he said sure. Skipped the other courses and didn’t get dessert, but Gede asked if I wanted a cappuccino (he remembered from last night), so I had cappuccino while everyone else had dessert.
There was a magician featured for the show that night, but I decided not to go and instead just went to my room to change clothes and just relax. When I got there, Handi had of course turned down my bed and left a “towel origami” in the shape of a stingray on my bed—it was really cute—along with a chocolate and the next day’s program. Read for a little while, then went to sleep around 11:00 pm.
And so ends day two in the continuing saga—stay tuned for more to come.
